About Handmade In Wiltshire & Cheryl Lloyd
Cheryl Lloyd When I first moved to Wiltshire six years ago, I was running a small garden nursery and selling plants from home. Lovely in the spring and summer but the winters could be long and very quiet! I started making jewellery because I enjoyed doing it, then realised people actually wanted to buy it, too. I had all the tools and components to hand and making alterations (or remaking) existing costume jewellery appealed to my thrifty soul.

I’ve always been fascinated by jewel colours, form and texture ever since my degree in Fashion and Textile design. I worked in interior design for some years and also had a market stall selling cat themed giftware, some of which I designed and painted. More recently I worked as a garden designer and after installing any hard landscaping I carried on maintaining the gardens for my clients, until we relocated to Wiltshire. Taking on the plant nursery was a natural step for me. However after a recent move to a smaller house (and garden) the jewellery naturally took over. You will usually find me surrounded by a chaos of trays and trays of gorgeous beads, glittering crystals, coils of shiny wire, sundry tools and cups of tea. Oh and one, or both, of my feline ‘Muses’ (Mews?!)

Feline Helper It’s hard to say exactly where my inspiration for a particular design comes from; I study fashion and jewellery trends and colours, I notice every necklace on other people, I check the glossy magazines and I absorb the beauty of my colourful garden. Sometimes the natural feel of a gemstone suggests how a piece should be made. I like to make wearable, modern classics with quality stones and glass and never, never any plastic!

I would like to give credit to several designers whose work fills me with pleasure and appreciation. Like many other modern wireworkers, I’ve been influenced by the amazing work of Eni Oken. I’d also like to give special thanks to Mei (Wirebliss) and also to Corra (De Cors Handmades). I’ve learned wonderfully special techniques from their skilful tutorials and friendly support. And when I use a pattern or design they created and published, I will credit them for my use of their design in the description of the piece.
